Weak lensing and gravity theories

چکیده
We present the theory of weak gravitational lensing in cosmologies with generalized gravity, described in the Lagrangian by a generic function depending on the Ricci scalar and a non-minimally coupled scalar field. We work out the generalized Poisson equations relating the dynamics of the fluctuating components to the two gauge invariant scalar gravitational potentials, fixing the new contributions from the modified background expansion and fluctuations. We show how the lensing observables are affected by the cosmic expansion as well as by the presence of the anisotropic stress, which is non-null at the linear level both in scalar-tensor gravity and in theories where the gravitational Lagrangian term features a non-minimal dependence on the Ricci scalar. We derive the generalized expressions for the convergence power spectrum, and illustrate phenomenologically the new effects in Extended Quintessence scenarios, where the scalar field coupled to gravity plays the role of the dark energy.

Separating dark physics from physical darkness: Minimalist modified gravity versus dark energy
The acceleration of the cosmic expansion may be due to a new component of physical energy density or a modification of physics itself. Mapping the expansion of cosmic scales and the growth of large scale structure in tandem can provide insights to distinguish between the two origins. Using Minimal Modified Gravity (MMG)—a single parameter gravitational growth index formalism to parametrize modi...
متن کاملConstraints on the Long-range Properties of Gravity from Weak Gravitational Lensing
Weak gravitational lensing provides a means of testing the long-range properties of gravity. Current measurements are consistent with standard Newtonian gravity and inconsistent with substantial modifications on Mpc scales. The data allows long range gravity to deviate from a 1/r potential only on scales where standard cosmology would use normal gravity but be dominated by dark matter. Thus, ab...
متن کاملProbing the dark matter issue in f(R)-gravity via gravitational lensing
For a general class of analytic f(R)-gravity theories, we discuss the weak field limit in view of gravitational lensing. Though an additional Yukawa term in the gravitational potential modifies dynamics with respect to the standard Newtonian limit of General Relativity, the motion of massless particles results unaffected thanks to suitable cancellations in the post-Newtonian limit. Thus, all th...
متن کاملConstraints on gravity on cosmic scales with upcoming large-scale structure surveys.
We consider how upcoming, prospective large-scale structure surveys, measuring galaxy weak lensing and position in tandem with the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies, constrain cosmic scale modifications to general relativity. In such theories, both the homogeneous expansion history and the growth of large-scale structure can have signatures of the modification. We consider an...
متن کاملWeak lensing in scalar-tensor theories of gravity
This article investigates the signatures of various models of dark energy on weak gravitational lensing, including the complementarity of the linear and non-linear regimes. It investigates quintessence models and their extension to scalar-tensor gravity. The various effects induced by this simplest extension of general relativity are discussed. It is shown that, given the constraints in the Sol...
